Fright Night

Oh yeah, Colin Farrell can act. Totally forgot about that what with him being a douche and all. Colin’s had a pretty good year back in the American spotlight with this and Horrible Bosses. He takes the cake (or should I say “blood pudding”) as Jerry the vampire in 2011 remake of Fright Night. Yes, the film is extremely self-aware that “Jerry” is a terrible name for a vampire. And Jerry is a throwback to the way the undead ought to be: Menacing, scornful, mocking, toying and simply oozing confidence. If you’ve spent the past 400 years killing and not dying you’d probably ooze confidence, too. None of this brooding shit. None of this need for love. It’s a demon, folks; it doesn’t want or need love. And Colin Farrell is perfect in reminding us of that fact. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed the performance of somebody playing a vampire. I know this much – it was before Twilight came out.

Ok, remote town outside Vegas.  Anton Yelchin, who does a nice job again in reminding us he’s not Chekov, is suckered into McLovin‘s intrigue. Chekov has been blowing off McLovin, because, well, in a high school that doesn’t contain Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse is FrightNt2 actually kind of a dork. But CMP knows Jerry is a vampire and when he sets out to prove it, hijinks ensue.

Toni Collette is in this movie for no reason. And all the actors are waaaaay too old for high school. Horror is always best when you worry for the people on screen. I worried once during a Chekov scouting mission — Jerry is their next-door neighbor, see, and very nearly catches the Ensign breaking into his house. Beam up!  Beam up now!  I guess that’s better than never being worried at all. And Chekov’s girl is an actress named Imogen Poots. I did enjoy Colin Farrell. No question. However, the long lasting impression of Fright Night 3D? “Imogen Poots”? Really?
