The Best Films of 2017

As I said yesterday, I didn’t see a picture far superior to the rest this year. So I’m just gonna hit you with my favorite watches from the 2017 movie season and you may disagree at your leisure.  In 2007, I picked Juno and The Kingdom as my #1 and #2, respectively, openly challenging either common cast member Jennifer Garner or Jason Bateman to appear in a top 2 film ever again.  I’ll go further upon 2017 reflections: I challenge any horror film in the future to pierce the annual top 2, let alone take the first and second positions.  I can’t say it was a banner year for the genre otherwise, but -far as I’m concerned- horror hit higher highs than all the rest combined in 2017.

Honorable mentions:

The LEGO Batman Movie

I feel like this is a kind of a threshold barrier film. I know it’s a cartoon and I know it’s just plain silly, but if you can’t enjoy a film like this, why even go to the movies?

Wakefield

No film offers greater parallel to the mentality of the Trump voter for me than Wakefield – a movie about a middle-aged white man who, in petty fashion, ruins every little bit of his life and the lives of those he loves just to get a sad sliver of revenge … on life itself?

The Insult

And no film reflects the conduct of the Trump voter more than The Insult. Oh? You think you’ve been wronged? Grow up, and for the love of Ivanka, get some perspective.

Step

My favorite documentary of 2017 examines the lives of minority teen coeds with bright futures. Sixty minutes in, I became so engaged with the minutiae of achievement, I completely forgot the dance theme.

Patriots Day

As reflections on the Boston Marathon bombing go, some of you might prefer Stronger. I don’t have a problem with that.

Loving Vincent

This film ranks #1 on the list of films I would have hated as a child, but adore as an adult. It doesn’t get much more erudite than illustrating the last days of Vincent van Gogh entirely in the style of Vincent van Gogh. Brilliant.

Dunkirk, Detroit

These are the tensest historic recreations of the year. Both films are unsettling, unnerving, and unfamily-friendly. Exactly what a thriller should be.

The Shape of Water

He’s an amphibian. That’s the last time I’m going to say that.
