Moving On (남매의 여름밤)

What are you supposed to do when a film has no plot points? Are you supposed to revel in deep character portrayals or complicated relationships? Suppose you can’t remember them? Suppose you know full well the film wasn’t Die Hard, but wasn’t exactly Terms of Endearment, either? What if you spend two hours waiting for a plot that never happens?

As far as I can tell, the “cataclysmic event” happened immediately prior to the timeline of Moving On. From what I can piece together, a single father lost his job and now everybody has to move in with grandpa … and grandpa ain’t exactly sold on the idea, so the kids have performance issues in the knowledge they have to earn their keep. Then dad’s sister moves in, too. And that’s your movie.

I kid you not. That is the entire movie.

This film has some moments, I think. Will father and auntie find mutual peace under grandpa’s roof? Will daughter find love by providing her would-be with knock-off sneakers? Will junior take over his father’s stolen knock-off sneaker concession? Will the knock-off sneaker concession be relegated to the exact weight it deserves [read: none]? None of it matters; I felt like every non-grandpa family member was just waiting around for grandpa to die so they wouldn’t feel as guilty about moving into his house.

Honestly? This film probably deserved a lower rating, but I just cannot remember much of it. Moving On didn’t etch a big enough path in my memory to earn words such as “disappointment” or “failure.” What I do remember is patiently waiting for something to happen. I’m still waiting.
